Do I pay withholding tax if I have a B permit?

Yes, by default. B-permit holders are taxed at source per cantonal tariff tables. Above a cantonal income threshold (commonly CHF 120,000/year), an ordinary tax return is also required.

What is the employee vs. employer split on AHV/AVS?

10.6% of gross salary total, split evenly: 5.3% employee, 5.3% employer, with no income ceiling.

Do Swiss citizens pay withholding tax?

No. Swiss citizens and C-permit holders aren't subject to Quellensteuer; they settle income tax via an annual return instead.

What is Quellensteuer?

Tax deducted directly from the salary of foreign employees without a C permit, based on cantonal tariff tables (income, marital status, children, religion), and remitted by the employer each month.

Is LPP/BVG calculated on my full gross salary?

No. LPP contributions are calculated on the coordinated salary (gross salary minus the coordination deduction of CHF 26,460 for 2026), not on gross salary itself. On a CHF 70,000 gross salary, for example, the coordinated salary is CHF 43,540, and the age-based savings rate (7–18%) applies to that smaller figure.

How much are total social charges in Switzerland?

Roughly 12–18% of gross salary for the employee, with a comparable amount paid by the employer on top. The LPP portion varies significantly by age, and since it's charged on the coordinated salary rather than gross, the effective percentage of gross is lower than the headline 7–18% figure suggests, especially for lower and part-time salaries.

Is church tax mandatory in Switzerland?

It depends on the canton and on registration. Where it applies, it's compulsory only for people registered with a recognized church, and is typically calculated as 8–14% of the simple cantonal tax (varies by canton and denomination). Geneva, Neuchâtel and Ticino make it voluntary even for registered members, and Vaud doesn't levy it at all. Anyone can avoid it by not registering, or by formally deregistering.

How is the 13th salary taxed in Switzerland?

It's added to annual gross income and taxed at the same rates as regular salary; there's no separate bonus tax. It simply increases the total income tax and social contributions owed for the year.

Do freelancers pay more social security than employees?

Effectively yes. Self-employed people pay AHV/IV/EO themselves, up to 10% of income, with no employer share to offset it, and typically arrange pension and accident cover voluntarily rather than through mandatory ALV/LPP.

Does health insurance come out of my Swiss paycheck?

No. Health insurance (LAMal) is mandatory but billed separately by your insurer, not deducted from salary. Budget for it on top of net pay, commonly CHF 350–500/month per adult.

How does telework affect frontliner taxation if I work in Geneva?

Two different thresholds apply. For tax purposes, Geneva's administrative practice allows up to roughly 40% telework from France before the corresponding share of salary shifts to being taxed in France. For social security, a separate agreement in force since July 2023 permits up to 49.9% telework from France without changing which country's social security system covers you. Crossing the 40% tax threshold can also make it harder to meet the 90% income test required for quasi-resident status.

Can the calculator work out gross salary from a target net figure?

Yes. Since Swiss deductions aren't flat percentages of the final number (tax is progressive, ALV has a ceiling, and LPP applies to the coordinated salary), the calculator solves it iteratively: it tests a trial gross salary, computes the resulting net, and adjusts up or down until the net matches your target.
